Narrative description of project:

The project forms a component of the MIS for Water Supply and Sanitation in the Monitoring and Evaluation Unit of DWD. The GIS component is a pilot project that complements WSS-MIS as a planning and monitoring tool through the provision of maps on safe water source and sanitation facilities of institutions. In 5 pilot districts the baseline survey was implemented through training sessions and provision of data collection materials. This survey involved the mapping of all safe water sources and collection of additional data by sub-county officers. In this way the Districts were assisted to obtain and maintain up-to-date information on the water situation. A GIS facility was set up at the M&E unit, and a district based water supply information system was developed with established data entry, management, analysis and reporting procedures.

Description of services provided by your staff:

15 working committee meetings were held, where design and implementation issues were discussed and settled.

The staff of WE Consult was responsible for the design and implementation of the data collection programme. Data collection forms were used to collect data on safe water sources and sanitation facilities at institutions.

The DWD staff was trained in the use of GPS receivers based on a pre designed user manual.  Group exercises and discussions were major learning tools. The water resources specialist supervised the training of the district staff by the trained DWD Staff.
