Narrative
description of project:
|
|
As part of a joint venture with Kagga
& Partners, WEGS Consultants was responsible for
the water resources assessment and analysis of catchment
characteristics of 40 sites in order to determine the
suitability of the sites for the construction of a valley
tank. Kagga & Partners carried out the topographic
surveys, the detailed design and the construction supervision.
The objective of the project was to supply water to
rural areas for domestic and cattle use in areas where
no alternative options were feasible. WEGS Consultants
carried out a detailed study comprising the analysis
of maps, existing population and livestock data and
hydro-meteorological data. A Geographical Information
System was used to delineate the catchment areas. A
detailed procedure and field data collection sheets
have been established to be used as reference during
the field verification exercise. The combined results
of the desk study and the field verification resulted
in a final report commenting on each of the 40 sites
and recommending 25 sites with the highest potential,
taking intop account all social, environmental, technical
and economical aspects.
