Narrative description of project:

The project concerned the geophysical siting of boreholes for hand-pumps in Mpeefu, Bwikara, Muhorro, Kagadi, Kakindo, Mwabiramira and Kasambya sub-counties in Kibaale District. The project was subdivided in five lots; the project started with the siting of 22 boreholes in Mpeefu and Bwikara in April 1998, followed by the drilling and test-pumping supervision, while the works for the second lot of 28 boreholes in Mpeefu, Muhorro and Kagadi commenced in December 1998. The third phase comprising of the siting and drilling supervision of 29 boreholes started in February 2000. Initially the drilling supervision was carried out by the Consultant, at a later stage drilling supervision manuals were prepared and District staff trained for supervision of borehole drilling.  The Consultant carried out the investigations for 29 boreholes in Kasambya and Kakindu, 31 boreholes in Kisiita, Kagadi, Kyanaisoke, Mwabiramira and 35 boreholes in Nkooko, Nyarweho and Mwabiramira in 2001 and 2002. Most of the boreholes have been drilled by different contractors supervised by either the Consultant or the District.

Description of Actual Services Provided by Your Staff:

·        Desk-study, API,  planning of geophysical siting phase

·        Execution of sitings through resistivity profiles and soundings, interpretation of measurements and selection of drill sites

·        Supervision of drilling and test-pumping

·        Training District staff in borehole drilling supervision

·        Final reporting

Description of Outputs and Results :

·        Reports: Siting Reports, Completion Reports

·        Increase of overall borehole success-rate from 42 % to 82 % in Mpeefu and Biwkara. For the other Sub- Counties success rates have been around 80% apart from Nkooko where the drilling of 15 boreholes resulted in a success rate of only 70%
